In April 2004, the vision that would give life to a unique institution was born: the creation of the Matias Soccer Club Soccer School in East Boston by JOHN JAIRO MEJIA “Matias” and JUAN FERNANDO MEJIA, in the United States. However, this idea was conceived much earlier, between 2002 and 2003, when it had not yet taken the form of a formal school. In those years, the focus was on holding soccer clinics, a practice that had been going on since 2001 and 2002, with the purpose of promoting the sport and culture of soccer in the East Boston community.

The history of Matías Soccer Club has its roots in the initiative of two brothers JOHN JAIRO and JUAN FERNANDO, both professional soccer players with a consolidated career. The arrival in the United States materialized thanks to the invitation of people committed to the Colombian community in East Boston, who wanted to promote culture and sports in the area. This trip took place on Colombia’s Independence Day, July 20, symbolizing the beginning of a new stage in this country.

JOHN JAIRO, after finishing his soccer career in 1998, and with the accumulated experience, saw in this opportunity a way to continue contributing to the world of soccer. The desire to encourage children to follow an active life through sports was the driving force behind the creation of Matias Soccer Club. The seed of this school was sown in 2002 and 2003, and finally germinated in April 2004.

The school’s vision was not limited to sports development; its mission was to provide recreation and promote a sense of community that, until then, had been lacking. In the United States, football, baseball, basketball and field hockey were at the top of the popularity charts, and soccer was in a less prominent position. Therefore, Matias Soccer Club set out to promote soccer in the East Boston Latino community, working closely with Latino immigrants in the area.

From its inception in 2001 until 2003, the school carried out numerous non-profit activities, actively participating in programs and cultural events aimed at the community. The focus was on educating children through sports, and volunteer work was a fundamental pillar in this process.

Finally, in 2004, Matias Soccer Club took a significant step forward by formalizing itself as a soccer school. With the support and strength provided by the community, the institution was established with the clear objective of benefiting children through education, healthy recreation and the positive impact of sports in their lives. The school began operations in East Boston in April 2004 and continued its work until the summer of 2006, marking the beginning of a journey that will last a long time.

In 2006, due to the resounding success experienced and the growing participation of children from diverse countries and cultures, Matias Soccer Club decided to expand its reach. Motivated by the demand and enthusiasm they had generated since their founding in 2004 through 2006, they made the strategic decision to open a new location in the city of Chelsea. Chelsea, located as the neighboring city of East Boston, became the next natural destination for the school’s expansion.

The invitation to set up shop in Chelsea came from olmilson medina, a key and passionate soccer figure in the community. olmilson, who already had his own established soccer school in Chelsea, recognized the positive impact Matias Soccer Club had made in East Boston and sought to replicate this initiative in his city. The growing demand of Latino and immigrant children interested in soccer motivated this collaboration. Thus, in April 2006, the opening of the soccer school in Chelsea materialized.

Success in Chelsea was not long in coming. The enthusiastic response from the community and the significant number of children from Chelsea and surrounding cities validated the decision to expand. From that time to date, Matias Soccer Club has maintained a solid presence in both cities, including Riviera, Everett and East Boston, establishing itself as an institution with strong roots in the community.

The school has evolved over time, adapting to the changing needs of the community. The acceptance of both the immigrant and non-immigrant Latino community has been fundamental to its continued success. As the school has strengthened in quality and knowledge, it has expanded its participation in important local and international events and tournaments.

Matias Soccer Club is not satisfied with simply being a soccer school; it aspires to provide meaningful opportunities for the children who are part of its program. Participation in major tournaments, both statewide and internationally, has been an outstanding achievement. The school’s commitment goes beyond the seasons of the year, actively participating in the spring and summer seasons, as well as the winter season, offering a comprehensive experience for young soccer players.

With an uninterrupted focus on the athletic and personal development of children, Matias Soccer Club has managed to become a benchmark in the soccer scene in Massachusetts and New England. Participation in international tournaments, such as the renowned Colanta baby soccer tournament in Medellin, Colombia, is a testament to the quality and global impact the school has achieved. From its beginnings in 2004 to the present, Matias Soccer Club has marked a trajectory of success, committed to bringing opportunities and dreams through sports to the children of the community.
